ROOFDEC TRIUMPHS IN THE SFS intec SECURITY BIG PRIZE DRAW

Roofdec Ltd has been awarded a brand new Ford Transit Connect van as winners of the SFS intec Security Big Plus Prize Draw. SFS intec’s Colin Yeates, Director of Construction Fasteners Business Unit and Managing Director Martin Gallagher were proud to present the prize van to Roofdec Directors, John Barnes and Norman Clarry.

Norman Clarry commented: “The chance to win a van by purchasing the roofing components you need on a daily basis from the industry’s undoubted leader was really something that excited the industry.” Colin Yeates commented, “Roofdec has worked in partnership with SFS for over 15 years and we hope we continue to enjoy a long and rewarding business relationship.”

The SFS intec Big Plus Prize Draw was based on spending against targets on SFS intec ancillaries, with above target spending gaining further chances of entering the draw for the new Transit Connect van. The Big Plus Prize Draw was open to SFS intec customers and proved a highly popular feature, attracting a large number of entries.

Security from SFS intec is an innovative supply chain package which puts together all fasteners and specialist ancillary products required for a project. Time and cost elements are minimised as there is just one supplier for all fastener, tools and ancillary components with one order, one delivery to site and one invoice. This is fully backed by performance warranties and gives every party in a project, from specifier to roofing contractor, complete confidence in long-term compliance to building regulations.

SFS intec irius® ON THE WATERFRONT

Becoming one of Glasgow’s most prestigious addresses, a new luxury 72 apartment development is being completed on Festival Park, immediately overlooking the Clyde and part of what once was the extensive industrial area between Scotland Street and the remaining shipyard at Govan. SFS intec austenitic stainless steel fasteners are an integral part of the twin skin roof construction of the 9 penthouse apartments looking over the river to the City.

“The austenitic stainless steel fasteners offer many advantages, they offer a neat rivet type finish that gives a smooth looking appearance and are easy to fix," commented John McGrevey of roofing contractor Grainger Building Services. “Corus recommended and supplied the SFS austenitic stainless steel fasteners as part of their total package, because it has low thermal conductivity so helps compliance with Part J. They offer high fastening and corrosion resistance performance and ideal where weather and condensation are significant factors.”

The built-up roof construction comprises a steel liner sheet fastened to purlins, supporting a Kalflex clear vapour control layer. 180mm of Kalzip Plus 44 glass fibre insulation quilt, is laid over the vapour control layer, topped by the 0.9mm Kalzip 305 stucco embossed aluminium weather sheet. SFS intec HATCHES ROOF FASTENERS AT THE INCUBATOR

Amongst many other distinctive design points, Dundee City Council Architects Department's striking new office development, The Incubator, features 1030 m² of Kalzip aluminium standing seam pitched roofs. The built up roof construction which includes steel liner over purlins, vapour control layer, insulation and a Kalzip 400 stucco embossed weather sheet, employed SFS intec austenitic stainless steel fasteners.

"Kalzip recommended the SFS SDK fastener peg to fix the ST clips to steel purlins," commented John McGrevey of roofing contractor Grainger Building Services. "The snap off peg ensures the fasteners are correctly driven and not over driven resulting in a lower pull out performance."

" We were happy to use the Kalzip recommendation as this ensured it was fixed correctly to minimise long term problems.

The centrally located building has been designed with excellent energy saving performance features. The roof insulation is Kalzip's new Plus 35 glass fibre quilt insulation with high thermal performance.

NEW PRODUCTION FACILITY FIT FOR A KING WITH HELP FROM SFS INTEC

In the construction of a new production facility for Kingspan Insulated Panels at the company’s headquarters in Holywell, Flintshire, roof fasteners from SFS intec were installed with Kingspan’s newly introduced Kingzip roofing system. Using SFS intec’s new Kingzip stainless steel fasteners, the 2000m sq Kingzip roof comprised composite panels and standing seams for on site assembly which is typically 50% faster than multi part site assembled systems.

In addition to the purpose-designed fasteners supplied by SFS intec, specialist ancillary products were also delivered direct to site for use by the contractor, European Sheeting Ltd. With SFS intec’s Security package, items such as tapes and sealants are supplied directly, thereby reducing a contractor’s purchasing time and costs as SFS intec managed the whole supply chain package.

The Kingzip composite panels are made up of steel inner sheets and an aluminium weather layer with a 90mm fire safe insulation layer. The Kingzip panels were zipped over a steel upstand which is fixed down by SFS fasteners to the purlins below.

Working in partnership, the SFS fasteners and the Kingspan system provide weather tightness, thermal, fire, structural and durability performance. These features facilitate rapid build speed and enhanced site quality, enabling Part L and J compliance.

The wall construction constitutes Kingspan micro-rib fire safe insulated panels fastened onto horizontal rails between up stands with 75mm SFS stainless steel fasteners.

SFS FASTENERS ADD POLISH AT CLARKS SHOES

irius® roofing fasteners from SFS intec have been integral in the construction of a distribution centre at Clarks Shoes, Somerset. Additionally, under the SFS intec Security package, all specialist ancillary products and site consumables were supplied, thereby reducing purchasing time and costs with supply chain management form SFS intec. Keith Froggatt of Kelsey Roofing Industries, the envelope contractor commented, "The SFS fastener and Security ancillary package definitely saved us time in sourcing and with the on-site installation."

The roof has a weather layer of stucco-embossed Corus Kalzip rolled on site to produce 160 m long sheets from eaves to eaves, self curved to a 455 m radius. It is an over purlin construction with the liner sheet, insulation layer and vapour control layer fixed to purlins, and Kalzip thermoplastic E-clips at 400 mm centres along the roof to secure the weather layer. The bull-nose eaves detail used SFS irius® fasteners with a metallic silver finish.

Designed to reduce thermal bridging the E-clips were fastened with specially developed SDK fasteners from SFS intec designed in partnership with Corus Building Systems. Dave Cottrell of Cours commented, "SFS intec has a similar ethos to us with regard to quality and customer service and has the capability and desire to work with partners." Together with Corus, SFS intec has developed the SDK as a "smart fastener" which ensures that the quality of the roofing is inherent in the fastener itself, rather than being dependent on the installation."

Paroc structural composite panels were used for the wall cladding, made up of 150 mm thick compressed mineral wool insulation bonded between galvanised steel skins, with an outer colour of metallic blue. Fixed to stanchions at 7,5 m intervals, the wall panels are self supporting, eliminating the need for conventional sheeting rails. The panels were fixed directly to the stanchions by 180 mm long hex-head stainless steel self-tapping fasteners, leaving a 26 mm gap between the panels.

An inverted top hat bar in blue metallic steel was used to cover the gap and hide the panel fixings and this was fastened directly to the stanchions with SFS irius® fasteners with blue-coloured domed heads.

FASTENING DOWN THE LID ON GCHQ WITH SFS INTEC

In Britain’s largest PFI project to date, irius® fasteners from SFS intec were chosen throughout for the roof construction of the new Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) in Cheltenham. Working in partnership with Prater Roofing Ltd and Corus Building Systems, SFS intec supplied fasteners for the doughnut shaped GCHQ main building covered by 12,000 square metres of Kalzip aluminium standing seam roofing.

Due to the toroidal shape of the main facility, SFS intec worked closely with Prater to clarify the fixing detail on the complex and unique roof build. The main campus comprises three radiused buildings covered by standard and tapered Kalzip sheets. The connections between the three buildings are over-roofed with three "petals" comprising 70m long (eave to eave). Kalzip roofing supported above the main roof with glazed side-wall panels. These "petals" complete the circle and are also carried over the internal and external entrances to the three buildings.

The main roof build up comprises a steel liner sheet fixed to purlins with SFS intec SD3 fasteners on top of which is laid the vapour control layer fastened down with bulbtite rivets. The Rockwool insulation layer sits above this with 80mm steel clips incorporating a thermal barrier pad fixed with SFS intec SX2 fasteners to top hat bars fixed to the steel liner. The Kalzip stucco embossed aluminium weather layer is clipped and zipped as a standing seam over the 80mm up stand of the steel clips.

To complement the aesthetic design of the buildings, the eaves to the petals have a bull nose profile hiding internal guttering with aluminium perglimmer finish soffits where the eaves overhang. SFS intec torx drive SX3 low profile fasteners were used for the secret fix detail on the eaves.

In addition to the main facility, fasteners from SFS intec were also used on six separate service buildings on the site known as the "String of Pearls". The roof build up here was similar to that of the main building.

The new GCHQ complex replaces 50 buildings spread over two sites with one efficient campus that will accommodate over 4,000 employees. The building will be maintained by a consortium of Carillion, Group 4 and BT for the next 30 years.

SFS irius GOES CELESTIA

SFS intec’s Construction Fasteners division has launched a range of irius®-coated fasteners with the exciting Celestia® by Corus metallic finishes for maximum aesthetic impact.

Helping to change the face of steel clad buildings, the combination of Celestia’s good looks and SFS irius®’ unrivalled performance is the natural choice for specifiers that are looking for a coordinated aesthetic finish.

The exciting metallic colour palette of Celestia, developed by Corus in collaboration with architects, offers the following colours for SFS irius® fasteners: Midas, Aurora, Electra and Orion.

Matching perfectly with Celestia’s colour range, the SFS irius® series comprises austenitic stainless steel fasteners with a patented low-profile head - unlike any other cladding fastener on the market. The flattened head of the fastener, which is lacquered to match the colour of the cladding panel, means that it is far less obtrusive than ordinary fixings. The unique under head drive means the fastener can be installed quickly and easily, without any site wastage.

Whilst the irius® fastener is radically different to other products currently on the market, top cladding manufacturers have been quick to recognise its aesthetic, installation and performance benefits.

New fastener helps contractors to avoid PART L2 (England and Wales) and Part J (Scotland) penalties

SFS intec, the company responsible for the most important recent innovations in roofing fastener manufacture, has launched UNIVERSAL - a product to revolutionize the effectiveness of twin-skin projects, and help contractors to meet the Part L & J building regulations.

At present, many twin-skin projects are completed using sheeting with unsupported laps. However, research by independent consultants has shown that such projects can be prone to "invisible" rifts, which occur when a rivet or inadequate fastener is drilled through the upper sheet, pushing the lower sheet down without engaging it. Although the sheet appears to be properly stitched from the top, in fact there is a gap underneath, which reduces the weather efficiency of the roof, and seriously affects the thermal efficiency of the building.

The new UNIVERSAL fastener from SFS intec helps contractors to avoid the problem of "invisible" gaps by including an efficient drill-point, together with a specially-shaped "sealing zone" between the head and the top thread of the fastener. The drill-point ensures that both upper and lower sheets are properly engaged and drawn together, whilst the sealing zone ensures that both sheets remain tightly clamped, without any risk of the sheet being "stripped" by over-tightening.

There are other benefits to using the UNIVERSAL fastener system, including logistics, and ease of use.

At present, several different kinds of fasteners with various head-forms are required to complete one twin-skin project. If supplies of just one of these fasteners runs out on-site (as often happens) then the entire project is forced to go on hold until a delivery can be made. By contrast, the UNIVERSAL can be used for fixing inner sheet to purlin, installing the bracket, fastening the sheet to the bracket, and stitching. Because only one type of fastener is required, logistics are simpler, and the potential for costly delay is vastly reduced.

The UNIVERSAL is also easier and faster to install than conventional lacquer-headed fasteners. Instead of a recess-drive, UNIVERSAL is installed with a competitively-priced installation gun attachment. This features "teeth" that grip around the whole fastener head, creating a very secure drive with no wobble, so the fasteners can be installed one-handed in hard-to-access locations.

Says Peter Hamby, Applications Manager of SFS intec, Part L2 & Part J will have a major effect on the roofing industry. SFS intec is helping contractors to ensure that they comply with the new regulations whilst staying competitive.

SFS intec Launches irius composite COMPOSITE

SFS intec, has launched a new carbon-steel fastener for composite panel applications, featuring revolutionary irius head technology.
irius head fasteners were developed by SFS intec in response to the joint needs of building designers, who were looking for a low-profile fastener that would not detract from the aesthetic appeal of modern cladding panels, and contractors, who required a faster, easier means of installation, avoiding the problems of slippage that commonly occurred with flat-headed fixings.

The irius Composite fastener combines the technical advantages of SFS intec’s existing composite range with the benefits of irius. Each fastener has a free-spin zone beneath the head of the fastener, followed by a 7mm threaded section. This draws the top-sheet up to ensure that the bonded aluminium/EPDM washer seals properly, but prevents the fastener from being over-tightened and causing damage to the sheet. In addition, the irius Composite range includes longer length fasteners to accommodate the increase in insulation thickness required to meet changes to the Building Regulations.

As the heavy-section fasteners are heat-treated, they are capable of withstanding dynamic loading (the sideways force that can cause inferior fasteners to shear and break), to meet European ECCS standards. An effective drill point allows the fasteners to be driven quickly through 14mm steel, giving additional on-site practicability.
All irius Composite fasteners are available in a wide range of colours, for an exact match with the panels of all major manufacturers.
