System VB by SFS intec

The VB system is a self-drilling composite system for assembling timber/concrete composite floors.

Technical information: VB-48-7,5 x 100 / 165

Material:carbon steel
Drive:external Torx E8
Surface finish:burnished
Diameter:Ø 7,5 mm

A structural system which improves sound insulation and fire protection, and increases load-bearing capacity.

Composite timber-concrete structures involve the shear-resistant attachment of a thin concrete slab at least 6 cm thick to a timber beam.

In the process the timber beam absorbs the tensile forces, while the concrete acts as the topping slab. This reduces flexing in the floor structure and at the same time considerably increases load-bearing capacity.

New: the system may be applied also for multi span floors.

The decisive component of the timber-concrete composite floor is the jointing element between the timber and the concrete.

This secures the advantages of the composite action in the timber and concrete. SFS intec's VB-48-7.5 x L mm jointing element has been developed for this application and fulfils all the requirements imposed on a timber-concrete composite element.

Advantages of the timber-concrete composite system

Exploit the advantages of the timber-concrete composite system in new buildings and refurbishment projects:

as owners:
  • preserving existing structures
  • combines advantages of reinforced concrete and timber joist floors
  • improved sound insulation and fire protection
  • higher working loads in changes of use / refurbishment projects
  • cost savings of 40% and more in refurbishment projects
  • uninterrupted use of the building
  • low-cost for new buildings
  • makes ecological sense: less concrete, more timber

as planners:
  • documentary material and system software for planning
  • general building regulatory approval
  • experience gained from over 1000 successfully completed projects
  • easy quality assurance/control
  • increased load-bearing security
  • increased rigidity
  • support in project planning

as contractors:
  • powerful setting tool
  • setting performance: 150 to 250 VB fasteners per hour
  • no pilot drilling
  • shuttering/wood strip flooring can be left in place
  • little shuttering effort
  • easy checking
  • support during the introductory phase

The system offering for low-cost timber-concrete joints

All the necessary resources are available for successful planning and execution with the SFS intec timber-concrete composite element, the standardised calculation program and the professional installation tool.

Working economically with the support of specialists

In the introduction of the composite system our qualified technical specialists provide advice and support during the project planning phase and installation work directly on the construction site.

A cost-saving method of joining timber and concrete

In refurbishment projects it is advisable or often even essential to reinforce existing floors. Removing existing timber floors and installing new concrete structures is avoided by means of timber-concrete composite structures. SFS intec's composite element enables timber and concrete to be joined efficiently, without having to remove well-preserved existing structures. The disturbing creaking of existing timber beams is also eliminated in the process.

A comparison which pays off

Compared with the conventional method, removal of the
floor or complicated reinforcement of the timber beams with boards
or steel butt straps is unnecessary. This also eliminates the additional cost of disposing of the material removed. Construction time is reduced by more than half in this way. The timber-concrete composite structure also substantially improves fire protection and sound insulation compared with pure structural timberwork (30 – 67 dB). Refurbishing floors with SFS intec's composite system means working faster, more comfortably and more safely.

Reliable, individual and low-cost. It pays off!

Implement creative visions at low cost in new buildings
With the timber-concrete composite system you can inexpensively combine timber - the natural building material - with concrete to produce a secure floor structure. Simply attach shuttering to the timber beams, install a separating layer, set composite elements and pour the concrete - that's all. If necessary, building services installations are laid before the concrete is poured.
Secure timber beams statically attached to the concrete floor
The timber-concrete composite element produces a secure floor structure in every case. In new buildings with or without floating sub-floors the timber-concrete composite structure improves both sound insulation and fire protection compared with a pure timber floor. Installing floor structures in new buildings with SFS intec's VB composite element means implementing creative visions at low cost through the rational combination of timber and concrete.

Calculating the joints

Calculation is based on the Deutsche Allg. Bauaufsichtliche Zulassung Z-9.1-342 (German general building regulatory approval).

Two different aids are available:

1. Technical documentation (only available in German)

SFS intec's calculation tables summarise all important information for simple, reliable calculation on the basis of locally relevant standards:

- arrangement of the fasteners
- prerequisites for using the table
- data for fire calculation
- sound insulation values of typical floor superstructures

2. Software (only available in German)

Innovative ceilings computed within seconds

Simply select the material option, enter cross-section geometry, span and loading – and off you go. The program automatically re-computes each input, so that variations can also easily be checked. The result is a clearly laid-out installation plan (incl. parts list) and a cross section and longitudinal section to scale. Longitudinal and cross sections can be exported in DXF format for producing drawings efficiently.
