Corrosion damage to mechanical fastening can be avoided.Architects, surveyors and builders alike need to consider adequate protection against corrosion. Simply trusting in a fastener's
corrosion proofing is not enough, if real corrosion resistance is demanded.
Whereas stainless fasteners have been specified for façade construction for many years,
they are still a rather new concept in flat roof construction. Following intensive research and development work, SFS intec has developed the first self tapping fasteners for such applications.
Corrosion damage is more expensive than corrosion protection.
By using a special high quality stainless steel featuring austenitic grain structures
[non-magnetic, A4 quality] corrosion can be effectively eliminated. Naturally the price structure is somewhat different to corrosion proofed fasteners. But we all expect our roofs to go on protecting us for decades; and besides the price of fasteners is but a minor element in terms of building costs.
Causes of corrosion
Depending on the design and watertightness of the roof, there are many possible causes of corrosion in traditional fasteners made out of carbon steel:
- damage to the protective coating during insertion
- continuously damp conditions on the roof
- different oxygen concentrations at different points on the fastener
- moisture in insulation materials. Sometimes corrosion can be accelerated by higher temperatures
