The process

Cold forming is a mass production technique for high volume manufacture. Components are produced on presses of two or more stations, starting from cut wire slugs, until the final shape is achieved.

Horizontal transfer presses produce technically demanding components like sleeves, special bolts and cams. Several press stages are needed from the cut wire to the finished design so that the feasible degree of deformation is not exceeded at any stage.

The wire raw material is drawn into the press using powered rollers, and a length is cut off between a cropping blade and retainer. The cropped slug is then transported to the first die by the cropping tool and a counter support.

The moving tool set forces the cropped slug into the die, while the retaining fingers release the slug and return to the previous station. All the slugs are thus deformed simultaneously. The part which has been pressed into the die is released by an ejector punch and transferred to the next station by transport fingers. The process then begins again.
